Driving

Driving to the Isle of Lewis will always involve a sea crossing at some point but lets start from one of Scotland’s major cities.

Travel by road from Edinburgh will involve taking the M90 to Perth.  If you leave from Glasgow you will take the M80/A9 to Perth and then follow the same route from Perth, using the A9 to Inverness, then follow signs for Ullapool.

At Ullapool you will take the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to Stornoway.  For rates and fares for the ship click here.

Public Transport

From Edinburgh or Glasgow you can either take a CityLink bus service to Ullapool (change Inverness on a through ticket) or you can take a train from either city to Inverness and change for the Ullapool bus service.  The train station and bus station are 5 minutes walk apart in Inverness.  The buses connect with the twice daily ferry to Stornoway.  In the event of ship being delayed the bus will usually remain in Ullapool to accommodate passengers making the return journey to Inverness.
